What is abdominoplasty?

  • Surgery to remove the excess pannus — the overhanging skin and fat of the abdomen
  • Usually combined with liposuction for comprehensive body contouring
  • Repairs rectus diastasis — the separation of abdominal muscles after pregnancy or weight change
  • Sometimes requires repositioning the belly button, or creating a new one
  • Ranges from a mini abdominoplasty to a full 360-degree procedure — the right type is decided jointly based on your body and your aims

This is not a spa visit

  • You will be admitted to hospital — at minimum one night, commonly 2–4 nights
  • It is a significant surgical procedure under general anaesthesia
  • If everything goes to plan, it is a straightforward surgery — but it must be taken seriously
  • Recovery takes weeks, not days

Who is this right for?

  • Excess abdominal skin that does not respond to diet or exercise
  • Abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti) after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Completed family — future pregnancies will undo the result
  • At or near a stable, healthy weight
  • Non-smoker, or willing to stop well in advance
  • Good general health with realistic expectations

⚠️ About scarring

  • There will be a scar — this is surgery, not magic
  • The incision is placed low across the abdomen, designed to sit within underwear or swimwear
  • Scars mature and fade significantly over 12–18 months
  • Most patients consider the trade-off — a hidden scar for a flat abdomen — worthwhile

Beyond week 2 — the bigger picture

  • 4–6 weeks — return to normal daily activity and light exercise
  • 6 weeks — compression garment comes off
  • 3 months — the majority of swelling resolved
  • 12–18 months — scar fully matured, final result visible
  • Results are long-lasting if weight remains stable

Situations where I will not operate

You are a smoker

"Smoking directly compromises wound healing. The risk of serious complications — wound breakdown, skin necrosis, poor scarring — is not acceptable to me. You need to stop, well before surgery, and I will want to know you have."

Your expectations exceed what I can deliver

"If I feel, after examining you and hearing what you want, that I cannot achieve what you are expecting — I will tell you. I will not operate just because you want me to. That is not a service I am willing to provide."

You cannot accept my limitations

"Every surgery has limitations. Every body has limitations. If you cannot accept that — if you need a guarantee of perfection — then we are not the right fit."

High BMI

"Operating on a high BMI significantly increases the risk of complications — wound issues, blood clots, anaesthetic risk. My strong advice is to reach a stable, healthier weight first. The result will also be far better for it."

What I will always tell you

"The type of abdominoplasty you need is not something I can decide from a photo. It is something we decide together, in the room, after I examine you and understand what you are trying to achieve."

Mini to 360 — what's right for you

"There is a spectrum — from a mini abdominoplasty addressing only the lower abdomen, to a full 360-degree procedure. Which one you need depends entirely on your body habitus and your aims."

What determines your cost

Type of procedure

A mini abdominoplasty is significantly less involved than a full or 360-degree procedure. The scope directly determines cost.

Hospital stay

One night and four nights are very different bills. The number of nights at Lakeshore Hospital depends on recovery and what surgery required.

Combined procedures

If liposuction to the flanks or other areas is performed at the same time, this adds to cost — though combining is usually more economical than two separate surgeries.

Consumables

Drains, compression garments, sutures and post-operative medications vary between cases and are factored into the final cost.

The range above is a ballpark to help you plan. Your exact cost can only be determined after a clinical assessment. Dr. Roy will give you a clear, itemised estimate at your consultation — before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions

In many cases, yes. Drains are placed to prevent fluid accumulation under the skin. They are typically removed within a few days, either before you leave hospital or at your first follow-up. This is routine and managed carefully.

In a full abdominoplasty, the belly button is repositioned through a new opening in the skin — it is not removed. In some cases, a new one is created. The aim is always a natural-looking result, discussed specifically with you before surgery.

Yes, and it is frequently done. Liposuction to the flanks and other areas is commonly performed alongside abdominoplasty to achieve comprehensive body contouring. Whether this is appropriate for you is assessed at consultation.

A mini abdominoplasty addresses only the lower abdomen — a shorter scar, less downtime, no belly button repositioning. A full abdominoplasty addresses the entire abdominal wall, including muscle repair and navel repositioning. A 360-degree procedure extends to the back and flanks. Which you need depends on your anatomy and goals.

Light walking from day one is encouraged. Returning to desk work is typically possible by week two. More strenuous activity — gym, running, heavy lifting — should wait until 4–6 weeks. Abdominal exercises specifically take longer to reintroduce safely.

The results are long-lasting, provided your weight remains stable. Significant weight gain after surgery will stretch the skin and undermine the result. Pregnancy after abdominoplasty will also affect the outcome — which is why we strongly advise completing your family before proceeding.

At Lakeshore Hospital, Ernakulam, abdominoplasty with Dr. Sinnet Roy ranges from ₹1,00,000 to ₹3,00,000. The cost depends on the type of procedure, hospital stay and whether liposuction is combined. A precise, itemised estimate is provided at consultation.
